Quercetin

Quercetin is a chemical that is present in the skins of fruits and vegetables like red onions and apples and gives it its unique color. It is believed to have anti-inflammatory as well as antioxidant properties. Thanks to the multiple health benefits it offers, quercetin is isolated through scientific methods and is being sold as an important dietary supplement. Quercetin is the most abundantly available flavonoid and has three rings and five hydroxyl groups. Other flavonoids use quercetin as a building block. Quercetin occurs naturally as an aglycone, meaning it is always attached to a sugar molecule. Irrespective of how much quercetin you consume, only a small quantity of it is actually absorbed into the blood and hence a dietary supplement becomes a necessity to provide the body with its required quantity of quercetin.

It is also believed to help relieve allergic reactions and asthmatic symptoms as it improves the lung's functioning capacity. Quercetin can reduce pain in arthritic conditions; reduces fatigue, anxiety and depression. The best way to increase quercetin would be to eat apples and red onions regularly in their raw state and with the skin (except for onions of course) as that is where the highest concentrate of quercetin lies. Apart from this certain energy drinks and green tea extracts also contain good quantities of quercetin. Antioxidants are known to slow down the ageing process considerably. Other fruits and vegetables that contain considerable amounts of quercetin are capers, the lovage herb, tea, red grapes, tomatoes, broccoli, citrus fruits and green leafy vegetables. Berries such as raspberry, bog whortleberry, cherry, lingonberry, chokeberry, cranberry, sweet rowan, sea buckthorn berry, rowan berry, prickly pear cactus fruit and the crowberry also contain quercetin in a good percentage, especially if they are wild and not cultivated. Studies have shown that organically grown tomatoes and grapes contained nearly 79% more quercetin concentrate compared to conventionally grown vegetables. Quercetin is also believed to exist in honey extracted from tea tree flowers and eucalyptus.
